The Catenian Association
The Catenian Association was established in Manchester in 1908. Since then it has grown to be an international association of Catholic men, boasting in excess of 10,000 members. Its initial aims, which remain to this day, were:
• To encourage members to meet socially, thus developing friendships amongst fellow Catholics.
• To provide help and assistance to members and their families, and to widows and children of deceased members.
• To assist members, as appropriate, in their business interests.
• To assist Catholic youth to find suitable employment.
Branches of the Association are called "Circles". The local Circle is Southend-on-Sea Circle which celebrated its centenary in November 2013. Currently the members come from Wickford, Rayleigh, Hockley, Rochford, Leigh-on-Sea, Westcliff-on-Sea and Shoeburyness. The largest contingent is from Our Lady of Ransom parish. Meetings are held on a monthly basis, usually at Park View Suite, Chalkwell. Visitors, by invitation, are welcome. The meeting normally lasts about 30 minutes during which prayers are said, any Catenian business is discussed and welfare matters are considered. After the meeting there is a social dinner. Regular social events are held which include ladies, friends and family.
The Circle Membership Officer is Paul Abbott.Should you be interested in joining the Association please contact Paul, tel. no. 01268 770692, who would be delighted to hear from you.
